Discover riparian zones and the important role they play in the landscape! Riparian zones are the lands along the edges of rivers, streams, lakes, and other water bodies whose soils and vegetation are shaped by the presence of water, making them different from upland, or dry, habitats.
During this presentation and guided walk, Andrew Middlebrook, Director of Land Stewardship at North Salem Open Land Foundation, will explore the abundant diversity within a riparian zone focusing on the native plants and animals that rely on them for habitat. We will also discuss these areas' important roles in preventing erosion, controlling water temperatures, filtering pollutants, and so much more. Come prepared with an open mind, a desire to learn, and a pair of waterproof boots!
About the Speaker
Andrew Middlebrook is the current Director of Land Stewardship at North Salem Open Land Foundation. Over the past decade, he has worked for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection as a Park Ranger and Westchester County Parks in their Conservation Division as a Naturalist. He is an avid outdoorsman who loves to hike, camp, bird watch and fish. He grew up in the Hudson Valley and has since relocated to Danbury, CT where he enjoys exploring all that New England has to offer. He is passionate about conservation work and values the frequent opportunities to observe wildlife in natural settings and the many relationships that have developed through his interactions with the community.
